Chaperone Supervision

The beginnings workshop is unsurpassed nationally in the strictness of its supervision of children, teens, and even young adults. This takes place during all structured recreational activities, at all meals, and especially overnight in every cabin/room. The workshop has enjoyed a spotless twenty-four year history of cutting-edge practices in nutrition, hygiene and emotional care, all provided by mature, experienced and well-trained chaperones who are under strict and direct supervision by both an experienced, professional Director of Staff, (Rick Flynn), and also the workshop's Director, Mr. Sklar.

With the youngest-aged students, there is one chaperone per every five (5) children, present at all times of the day and night, including meals, traveling, activities, classes, overnight, etc. (The chaperone/student ratio decreases to a minimum of one chaperone per every 8 - 10 of the oldest students.)

No student of any age is ever alone or unsupervised for even one moment at any time throughout the workshop.

Conscientious focus is always given to the hygiene, nutrition and emotional state of every student.

Additionally, all students are required to write to their parents on at least three occasions during the seven-day workshop.

There is a thorough orientation and training session for all staff prior to the first day dealing specifically with issues of health, nutrition, safety, care and supervision. This is conducted directly by Mr. Sklar and Mr. Flynn. Additionally, there are daily meetings during the workshop to evaluate the personal progress and behavior of each individual young person.

Housing accommodations include fully-enclosed wooden cabins equipped with cot or double-decker bunk beds with guard rails, smoke alarms, electricity, hot water, bathrooms and showers, all inspected regularly, approved and licensed by the New York State Department of Health. There is a Physician and/or at least one experienced Licensed Registered Nurse on duty and on the premises 24 hours per day.

Additionally, the workshop itself is located no more than thirty minutes from the nearest hospital emergency room.

A thorough health examination , documented by a physician, is required of all participants and chaperone staff prior to the start of the workshop.

All workshop activities and facilities are fully insured.

Workshop is held in carefully chosen licensed facilities located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or upstate New York 100-200 miles from New York City. The Beginnings workshop itself, its staff, program policies, facilities, and its Director, Peter Sklar, are annually inspected, monitored, and formally licensed by the New York State Department of Health.
