for Young People

An approach to
professionalism as caring as
it is practical

Established 1984

Beginnings started as an experimental musical theater workshop for 37 young people from New York's Westchester County, in the summer of 1984. Enthusiastic word-of-mouth resulted in a tripling of the program's enrollment by the following summer, and a winter program was added. This too tripled in enrollment by its second season. Nation-wide television and newspaper coverage followed, attracting young people from nearly all fifty states and Europe.

In 1989, as demand grew for the program, Mr. Sklar began limiting enrollment exclusively to young people invited on the basis of a
personal interview and/or reading.

In recent years, the scope of the beginnings workshop has expanded beyond the performing arts to include classes in T'ai Chi, martial arts, and a strong emphasis on organic-based nutrition, personal growth and self-esteem.

Currently, the workshop is presented several times each year - at the beginning and end of summer in New York, as well as over Thanksgiving week in London, England, and also mid-summer in Hollywood, California, each session lasting seven (7) days. Young people who are interested in attending a workshop must participate in a complimentary seminar and interview with at least one of their parents, unless they are eighteen years of age or older.

As of this printing, less than thirty (30%) per cent of more than two thousand yearly interviewees are invited to the beginnings workshop. Admission is based on the maturity, self-awareness, creativity, verbal expressiveness and self-motivation of applicants.
